An Introduction to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
with Tom Parkes, LCSW
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a clinical approach grounded in empirical science that moves away from symptom reduction as a primary goal. ACT helps individuals cultivate rich and present-centered lives while learning how to compassionately accept the difficult inner experiences that arise along the way. As a transdiagnostic model, ACT focuses more on the underlying processes of suffering and growth rather than treating specific diagnoses.
This training will begin with an overview of the basic theory and goals underpinning ACT. Participants will then learn the 6 core processes of change targeted in the model, which together are called “psychological flexibility.” These processes focus on creating a more accepting relationship to distressing thoughts and feelings, cultivating more present moment awareness, and developing patterns of committed action guided by personal values. Participants will leave this training with some core ACT skills and insights to integrate into their practice.
In this workshop participants will:
Describe the goals and theoretical foundation of ACT from a clinical perspective
Understand the 6 core processes involved in psychological flexibility
Learn several helpful ACT skills to integrate into practice
